More than two thousand years ago, the Romans and Greeks already liked to tile the floors of their houses and temples with marble and granite; and decorate their walls with intricate tile mosaics, depicting their gods and heroes.

Although initially only available to the nobles, used in mansions and public places, frequented by the nobles, tiles were an important factor in the building industry, right through the ages.
With the onset of the industrial revolution in the mid 1900’s, factories started manufacturing tiles in bigger quantities, thus resulting in tiles becoming more affordable and accessible to the man in the street. Nowadays there is hardly a household, be it rural or urban that is not fitted with tiles. Over the years, the material, styles and demand for tiles have changed tremendously. Today tiles are available for every possible application, and are available in ceramic, porcelain, natural stone and other materials. A further development is that big manufacturers, especially from Europe and America, are becoming more environmentally conscience, and while tiles are still a natural product, the environment is not necessarily negatively affected by its production.
